ABOUT ELSA'S KOPJE : |
We've named
our lodge Elsa's Kopje - for Elsa, the orphaned lioness reared
by George and Joy Adamson and returned to the wild in Meru, and
Kopje (meaning hill in Africaans) for the rocky outcropping it
sits on.
- Located within Meru National Park -
northeast of Nairobi (7 miles north of the Equator)
- Hot days, pleasant nights
- Access by road or charter flight
- 8 stone and thatched cottages- 2 with
twin beds, 6 with king-sized beds
- Swimming pool
- Gift shop
- Airstrip - Mughwango Hill (at camp)
YOUR PRIVATE COTTAGE:
From your cottage, tucked into the rocks
and forms of the hill, enjoy a 270 degree view of this
beautiful, wild park. The landscape and vegetation is
fascinating, tracing the lines of ancient landforms created by
the series of lava flows off the Nyambene Hills towards the Tana
River many millions of years ago. The different soil ages have
created distinct patterns of vegetation from lush thick bush to
sparse arid sections, a unique and eyecatching eco-system now
crisscrossed by 13 tree lined rivers.
NEWSFLASH (Nov 2001):
Air Kenya now operates a schedule service
to/ex Meru 3 times a week on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday, ideal
for getting to Elsa's Kopje and connects on to Samburu and the
Maasai Mara.

| MERU
NATIONAL PARK : |
Meru
National Park in the old Northern Frontier District, is wild
Africa at its most alluring. The animals are shy, unused to
their human counterparts. Here we've established a private
hideaway perched on top of Mughwango Hill, site of George
Adamson's first camp.
This park is singular in Kenya for being
the driest, with little rainfall, and at the same time
resplendent with thirteen rivers and numerous streams running
off the nearby mountains. The result is a striped landscape with
lush green ribbons running through dry brown valleys.
British actress and conservationist
Virginia McKenna made an emotional return to the place where she
filmed 'Born Free', Joy Adamson's true story of 'Elsa' the
lioness returned to the wild here on Mughwango Hill, site of
Elsa's Kopje, in Meru National Park.
MUGHWANGO HILL
"My little camp under Mughwango
Hill in the Meru National Reserve was built of palm thatch… I
felt a surge of elation as I left the artificial world… for
the last time and drove north to Meru. Mughwango Hill is covered
with green scrub and rusty-cloured rocks."
George Adamson
