CLASSIC KENYA SAFARI :
The Classic Kenya Migration Safari is a set itinerary, 10 day, fixed departure safari for a minimum of 4 people and maximum of 10. We have found this to be a very nice number, as it gives you some social interaction, but the group is not too large and noisy.

It is ideal for singles or doubles that would like to do a "Vintage" type guided tented safari, but prefer joining a group.

The itinerary covers the best of Kenya, you have 5 nights in the northern area, (3 in the Samburu National Reserve, and 2 in North Laikipia), then 1 night in the Rift Valley, and finally 3 nights in the Maasai Mara in a private camp, fly back to Nairobi.

FEATURED PROPERTIES

Samburu Intrepids: Perched on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river as it flows towards the Tana River, in the soul-stirring wilderness of Samburu National Reserve, this remarkable camp offers comfort and a warm welcome at the start of your safari. The 27 'bush luxury' tents are spacious, each with its own secluded deck and sweeping views over the river where huge herds of Elephant, Buffalo and Zebra come daily to drink. Tents are furnished with giant four-poster beds and handsome mahogany furniture offset by modern en-suite bathrooms and the most luxurious facilities.

Sabuk Lodge, Northern Frontier District: On the edge of the Laikipia Plateau and Samburu land, Sabuk looks over the Ewaso Nyiro River, which runs through a gorge 150 feet below. There is a lot of game in the area, it just depends on the time of year as to where the animals are, including Greater Kudu, Reticulated Giraffe, Buffalo, Impala, Elephant, Warthog, Klipspringer, Zebra, Eland, DikDik, Waterbuck, Lion, Leopard, good bird watching and incredible scenery. The lodge has 5 ensuite bedrooms. Each room is comfortably furnished and unique, built with the natural materials and features of the hillside incorporated into the open plan design.

Longonot Ranch House, Lake Naivasha: Facing out over the plains towards Lake Naivasha, this traditional settler home was originally built by Hemingway. Built in a quadrangle with cosy bedrooms, en-suite bathrooms and a gracious comfortable sitting and dining room, Longonot Ranch House is a taste of tradition. The gardens, shaded by pepper trees, have amazing views of Longonot, a distinctive (long extinct) volcano and from its hillside setting, wonderful views out over Lake Naivasha towards the hills beyond. On the other side the ranch borders Hells Gate National Park and offers excellent game viewing, relaxation and riding out amongst the game on well schooled horses.

Cheli & Peacock Mara Camp, Maasai Mara: This traditional safari camp is idyllic; shaded by an indigenous forest of mature trees the camp looks out on an endless vista of plains game and the open plains characteristic of the world's most sought after game reserve. The 6 traditional safari tents are very comfortable and spacious with en-suite hot showers, safari 'short-drop' toilets, washroom and dressing area. Evenings by the campfire overlooking the plains, lit only by the soft glow of hurricane lamps and dinner under the stars are a special feature. This is an original bush camp. Here you leave the modern world behind and relax with nature, evenings bathed in the soft light of hurricane lamps, no generators, no vehicles passing, just the sights and sounds of the bush...

NORTHERN FRONTIER SAFARI :
Meru, Samburu, Laikipia & Maasai Mara
13 Day Luxury Fly/Drive Safari

Elsa's Kopje, Meru National Park.

Elsa's Kopje is a luxurious oasis in the wilds of Meru National Park, home to Elsa the lioness made famous by George and Joy Adamson. 9 'Makuti' (thatched) stone cottages blend into the hillside, each with its own bath or shower and flush toilet ensuite and private verandah with a unique view. The cottages face across seemingly endless savannah, fringed with doum palms, crisscrossed by 13 rivers. Bush babies and Hyrax live on Mughwango Hill and close by Elsa's descendents hunt the shy but plentiful plains game. This Park is renowned for its Elephant herds and fantastic flora and scenery. As well as plains game, Hippo, Giraffe, Lion, Elephant and Rhino are regularly sighted, with a new Rhino Sanctuary currently under construction just below Mughwango Hill, where this designer retreat faces out across the plains.

Kitich Camp, Mathews Range, Northern Frontier District:

Kitich lies in the southern part of the Matthew's Mountain range, a remote, unspoiled and rarely visited area of Kenya, that rises from the grey desert of the country's Northern district. The Camp itself nestles in a verdant grove of fig trees, indigenous flowering shrubs and prehistoric cycad palms on the bank of the seasonal Ngeng River and is surrounded by thickly wooded hillsides and craggy peaks. The people of the southern Matthew's are the pastoral Samburu and Soyei. They called it "Kitich" meaning "the place of happiness". Kitich Camp is a lush oasis amid arid surroundings. Everything about Kitich Camp has been left as natural as possible without sacrificing any important creature comforts. Each of the 6 luxury tents features its own verandah and view, plus traditional bucket showers and hygienic long-drop toilet.

Sabuk Lodge, Ewaso Nyiro, Northern Laikipia:

On the edge of the Laikipia Plateau and Samburu land, Sabuk looks over the Ewaso Nyiro River which tumbles through a rocky gorge 150 feet below. Each room is comfortably furnished and unique, built with the natural materials and features of the hillside incorporated into the open plan design looking out over the Ewaso Nyiro River and the valleys beyond.

Mara Camp, Maasai Mara.

The 6 traditional safari tents are very comfortable and spacious with en-suite hot showers, safari 'short-drop' toilets, washroom and dressing area. Evenings by the campfire overlooking the plains, lit only by the soft glow of hurricane lamps and dinner under the stars are a special feature of this seasonal tented camp. This is an original bush camp. Put up for the season and then packed away to leave no trace behind. Here you leave the modern world behind and relax with nature, evenings bathed in the soft light of hurricane lamps, no generators, no vehicles passing, just the sights and sounds of the bush...

Your fly camp will be pitched for you ahead of your arrival carried there by a train of pack Camels and set up in the shade of the indigenous Acacia and Fig trees. After lunch spend the afternoon taking a welcome siesta, lazing on the riverbanks or swimming in the river. After drinks round the campfire and dinner, sleep under canvas, listening to the night sounds of the bush.

DAY 4: Sabuk, Laikipia
After an early breakfast in camp, you venture on foot across the Sabuk wilderness, taking a different route back, following the twisting course of a dry riverbed looking for overnight tracks in the sand. Return to the lodge for lunch. Spend the afternoon at leisure. Bathe in the river, stand in the waterfall and bask in the sun on the hot black rocks. A late afternoon walk to the perfect sundowner spot is a must: high on a rocky outcrop overlooking the plains and to toast the magnificent sunsets you get here.

DAY 5: Island Camp, Lake Baringo
An 0600 wake-up call will be necessary for an early breakfast before driving across the Laikipia Plateau to the edge of the escarpment. En-route you will see a myriad of plains game, Jackson's Hartebeest (endemic to Laikipia and an endangered species), Grevy Zebra, Grant's Gazelle, reticulated Giraffe and often Lion. Drive down into the Rift Valley, witnessing the dramatically contrasting scenery as the ecosystems change. during the drop from an altitude of 6,200 feet down to 3,000 feet. Arrive at the rustic town of Chura where you can remount your bikes and ride past the town of Tangulbei ("where water turns" in the language of the local Pokot tribe) and on to Lake Baringo. Here, on the shores of this Rift Valley lake you dismount from your bikes and boat across to Island Camp for a late lunch and an afternoon to enjoy the birdlife and watersports offered here.

DAY 6: Island Camp, Lake Baringo

For the energetic, take a boat ride back to the mainland and drive to Lake Bogoria. Apart from the stunning pink Flamingo, there is an abundance of plains game and birdlife. Relax with your picnic breakfast before returning to Island Camp for a late lunch and a lazy afternoon, completing the day with Sundowners on the Gibraltar rock. VINTAGE SAFARI :
A Vintage Safari is totally private and we create the itinerary specifically for you based on where you want to go and what you want to do!

The things that set a Cheli & Peacock Vintage Safari apart from other safaris and what makes your trip a bona fide "African Adventure" are:

  • Your guide, Steve Outram or Simon Ball are professional safari guides and are not just a 'driver / guide'! They are all members of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association and this is a real bonus to your safari. Our guides are extremely knowledgeable, with an intimate understanding of the African bush and wildlife, and will be able to tell you about a zebra family group, the harvester ants and show you how to follow the 'African Honey Guide'. You will not just 'tick-off' the Big Five as you drive around the reserves and parks. He is experienced and responsible, ensuring complete enjoyment your safari.
  • Your vehicle will be a specially equipped 4 Wheel Drive, not a 'pop-top' van. With your professional guide driving you himself, you cannot fail but to have a wonderful game viewing experience. Our vehicles all have game viewing hatches or are open, they are comfortable, equipped with a VHF Radio and are prepared for any eventuality!
  • Your accommodation will be in Private Tented Camps in which your group will enjoy complete exclusivity. You and your guide will plan each day as it comes, perhaps taking a full day's excursion into the wilderness surrounding your camp or an early morning game drive with a surprise bush breakfast! In between the Private Camps, most itineraries include a one or more nights stay in private game ranches or homesteads, where you will not have exclusive use of property. They are small, select properties where you will meet some local personalities and enjoy good hospitality fitting into the spirit and pace of a Cheli & Peacock Vintage Safari, complementing the whole itinerary.
