CAMEL SAFARIS :
Nothing ventured nothing gained, and a camel safari taking you through the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy with its abundant wildlife and their habitat is surely an experience of a lifetime.

Il Ngwesi, where a traditional way of life is in harmony with its wilderness and wildlife provides a cultural aspect and incredible scenery that will be a memory not to be forgotten. Further to the North the forested and watered mountains of the Mathew's Range dominates the vast arid area of some of the wildest and unspoiled wilderness of Kenya. The safari will take you through this area and beyond and will lift your spirits as only true adventure can.

Each safari is uniquely different depending on the route taken, and can be 3-14 days. The maximum number of people on each trip is 6 and each safari is exclusive to your group. Comfortable camping facilities, excellent cuisine and experienced guides will ensure your well being on your safari.

This is a walking safari but riding camels are available when the terrain allows. You do not need to be superbly fit, however a sense of adventure and a little resilience is all you need to enjoy your camel trip.

Most travelling is done in the cool of the morning, arriving in camp after 3 - 4 hour walk. Lunch and a rest in the heat of the day will recharge you for an early evening game walk and sundowner to watch the dusk creeping over the land. A hot shower, an evening around the campfire and a night under the stars with all the exciting sounds of an African night will complete your day.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
Cool bush clothes, a set of warm clothes, sweater, light rain coat, two pairs of comfortable walking shoes or boots, hat, sun cream, insect repellent and a water bottle all packed in a soft bag. You must have your own comprehensive travel insurance and please anticipate staff gratuities if you are happy with their services. Beer and wine are provided but bring any preferred spirits of liqueurs.

PLEASE ENQUIRE FOR RATES AND OPTIONS

CAMPING :
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is honoured to associate with the reputable Abercrombie and Kent (A&K) who have an exclusive camping concession to the Conservancy. The agreement allows A & K to bring in a maximum of sixteen guests per night to their luxury camps, which are set up at the Digby’s and Leparua campsites. The concession however allows A&K to book in alternative operators within the sixteen beds per night stipulation, as long as they have not filled in space themselves.

The A & K guides and camp operators are linked with the Lewa UHF radio network to enable them communicate with our operations room and Lewa guides on issues relating to maximizing visitor experience on the Conservancy. A couple of rangers are assigned to their camps and our workshop is available for any service that their vehicles may need.

While this association allowed A& K to entertain their guests at a premier destination teeming with wildlife, pleasant landscapes and unsurpassed tranquility, it has on the other hand benefited Lewa Wildlife Conservancy with much needed tourism income to supplement donor funding.

INFORMATION :

Although there is some flexibility, Lewa is officially closed to tourism during the rainy seasons, between 1st April and the 15th May and again between the 1st November and the 15th December.

Lewa is situated at 4,500 to 6,500 feet (1,400-2,000 metres) above sea level. The days are usually hot and dry and the nights quite cool. Lewa is a low risk malaria zone. Clothing should be cool for the day and warm for the evening game drives and sundowners followed by the night game drive home. A windcheater or fleece are essential, as are good walking shoes.

Minibuses are not permitted on the Conservancy. All game drives are made in four wheeled drive vehicles provided by LWC or the safari companies and accompanied by trained guides.

The simplest way of reaching Lewa is by flying direct from Nairobi (Wilson Airport) with Air Kenya for $220 (return) or $120 (single).

As well as visiting the two community wildlife schemes that Lewa has helped establish (Il Ngwesi and the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust) it is now also possible for visitors to stay at Lake Rutundu, in a remarkable setting high on Mount Kenya.
