Depending
on what time of the morning they arrive, if they are not going to be
there the night before or before 10.00 a.m., it would probably be more
sensible to reverse the itinerary and start with Lake Mburo (so Mpigi
drum makers and lunch may be in Kampala or Masaka). The cost would
remain the same. The Swamp
walk is enjoyable but after the primate walk, it is not as exciting so
it is best to do this on the afternoon of the first day in Kibale.

Day
01 Arrive At Entebbe
Airport, transfer to the Lake Victoria Hotel for quick briefing
before we go to the
famous Entebbe Botanical Gardens and wildlife center, welcome dinner and
overnight at the Lake Victoria Hotel
LD
Lake
Victoria Hotel is a completely renovated colonial hotel with beautiful
gardens and swimming pool, it is 4 star and has 99 rooms.
Day
02. Drive westward to Kibale forest approximately 7.5 hours on
sealed and dirt roads. The route slowly ascends from the Lake Victoria
Basin into the lush rolling foothills of The Ruwenzori Mountains
(Mountains of the Moon). The road passes through villages and farmland
where every imaginable fruit and vegetable of the tropics can be seen
growing. Birding is excellent as the road passes through rainforest
regions, agricultural land, papyrus swamps and scrub land before
reaching the famous tea growing area around Fort Portal and Kyanjojo.
Pass through tea plantations into Kibale Forest and the Mantana camp. Afternoon tea and then we set of for the swamps, hoping to
see some of the 13 primates found in this area. Overnight Mantana Kibale
Camp. BLD
Day
03. Early breakfast and transfer to the Kibale Park
for the primate and forest walk.
Apart from the 13 primates, 9 diurnal and 4 nocturnal, this
tropical forest is fantastic with the different trees, creepers and wild
flowers. A night walk to
see the potto and galago can be arranged (optional) Overnight Mantana
Kibale Camp BLD
Clients
doing their safari during March, April, May and November can join the
chimpanzee habituation team and spent the day learning about chimpanzee
and how the team habituate the chimpanzee groups. We start by walking to
the previous night’s “nesting” and help to dismantle the old nest
before trekking through the forest, following the signs and spoors until
we reach the current location of our chimpanzee family.
The habituation team explain the body language and sounds as we
watch and help collate data and we also learn about the flora in this
unique, indigenous tropical forest. In the evening, we watch as the chimpanzee prepare their
“nests” for the evening – the juveniles are particularly amusing
as their lack of body weight prevents them from packing the foliage into
a nest – those who have small children will recognise the frustrated
juvenile temper tantrums and we have it confirmed – the chimpanzee are
truly man’s closest relatives! We
overnight in the Mantana luxury camp BLD
Day
04. After breakfast drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The
drive passes through Fort Portal and then south along the eastern length
of The Ruwenzori Mountains, with the hope of seeing the glaciated peaks.
The drive takes approx 3.5 hours and once again gently descends into The
Great African Rift Valley and Q.E.N.P., lunch and afternoon launch trip
(2 hours) on the Kasinga Channel to view some of the largest
concentration of hippo in the world (30,000 + animals) other game and
excellent birding. Q.E.N.P. is said to be the best birding park in
Africa, with 560 + recorded and with a record of 296 bird species seen
in one 24 hour period! Over
night in Mweya Lodge, situated on a peninsula overlooking Lake Edward
and Kasinga Channel, offering beautiful views of the park with The
Ruwenzori Mountains in the background. Mweya Lodge has been completely
renovated to a high standard, with excellent en suite rooms, restaurant,
bar area, pool and outside dining. BLD
Day
05. Breakfast and drive through Queen Elizabeth National Park
heading for the Impenetrable Forest and our luxury camp at Bwindi.
Road and weather conditions permitting, we game drive through
Ishasha hoping to see the tree climbing lion and other wildlife. We pass
through the scenic area known as The Switzerland of East Africa approx
4.5 hour drive, o/n Mantana Camp. BLD
Day
06. Gorilla trek, o/n Mantana Camp. BLD Gorilla trekking. After
breakfast take a short drive to Park H Q., meet with excellent local
guides and trackers who will give a talk on the ethics of Gorilla
trekking. Then clients hike into the forest to where the Gorillas were
seen the night before, then they are tracked from that point. The trek
can take from 1 to 6 hours to altitudes in excess of 7,500 feet over
rough and at times muddy terrain. Although the hike can be physically
demanding the beauty of the forest and surrounding scenery make the trek
worthwhile. Once the Gorillas are located all fatigue is forgotten, as
the experience is often described as being the most profound natural
history experience in the world. Picnic lunches are provided and it is
important to take plenty of water. Cameras and plenty of fast speed film
is recommended. It can rain at a few minutes notice, hence water proof
clothing is a good idea, also zip lock bags for cameras and film.
Day
07. Second Gorilla trek, o/n Mantana Camp. BLD
Please
note: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is "A World Heritage Sight"
Day
08. Drive to Lake Mburo N.P. (6 to 7 hours with stops), passing
through Switzerland of East Africa and eventually in to Ankole Cattle
country around Mbarara. These cattle are incredible with horns larger
than one can imagine! Then enter the park for a short game drive and an
afternoon boat trip to the local fishing village, o/n Mantana Camp. BLD
Day
09. Early morning bush walk to be at the swamps by 7.00 a.m. hoping
to see the rare Shoebill and other wildlife before breakfast.
After breakfast, we drive to Entebbe (approx 5 hours) and if time permits it will be possible to
stop at Mpigi Royal Drum Makers en route before lunch in Kampala.
