About The Ark :

Set in the heart of the Aberdare National Park, this unique game lodge overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick which attracts a host of wildlife - elephant, rhino, leopard, bushbuck and occasionally an elusive bongo or giant forest hog. Resembling and named after Noah's Ark, The Ark comprises three decks from which numerous balconies and lounges provide superb vantage points for game viewing. A ground level bunker provides excellent photographic opportunities and takes you closer than you would believe possible to the animals. The Ark is reached via the Aberdare Country Club and is a forty minute drive. It is 16 km from Mweiga airfield, a one hour drive from Nyeri airstrip and a two hour drive from Nanyuki airstrip.

Bedrooms:      The Ark has 60 comfortable en-suite cabins fitted with buzzers to announce the arrival of one of the "Big Five" at the waterhole. The cabins comprise 6 single, 37 twin, 10 double and 7 triple-bedded cabins.   All cabins have private bathrooms with shower; all are comfortably furnished and enjoy a view of the forest waterhole.

Restaurants and Bars:      Dinner and breakfast are served "On Board" in the main dining room. A gourmet Table d'Hote menu is on offer, and the food is all grown locally. The Ark and Aberdare Country Club are renown for the fresh vegetables, succulent meats and delicious puddings and desserts served at mealtimes.  Located on one of the viewing decks is a lounge and a bar which remains open all night for tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Blankets are also available to ensure guests' comfort .

Safaris and Sightseeing:      The Ark has four game viewing areas from which to observe the ever present wildlife. There is a ground level hide where you'll literally come face to face with animals.  You can, on a full-day game drive, visit the Aberdare National Park. Travelling through the Salient, you gradually climb in your vehicle to the National Park gate at a height of about 8000 feet.  As you ascend, you see the vegetation change to tall cedars, Podo trees, thick Bamboo forest and varieties of Alpine trees. Wild mountain flowers bloom in a riot of colour. Profuse bird-life (including such species as the scarlet tufted malachite sunbird) reside here. Despite the dense vegetation, you may have glimpses of elephant, buffalo, zebra, colobus monkey and waterbuck. At 10,000 feet in the upper tundra region you see the majestic peaks of Mt. Kenya, Batian and Nelion.

Another option is a visit to the Salient. Only specially authorised vehicles are permitted to visit this area of  the Aberdare National Park in an effort to conserve and protect the environment. This Park is home to elephant, rhino, buffalo, bush buck, giant forest hog, Sykes monkey, leopard and the rare bongo. An ornithologist’s paradise, sunbirds - tacazze, golden winged malachite, dainty double-collared and scarlet-chested - emerald Narina’s Trogon and the crowned eagle are a few of the species to sight. All the Aberdare Country Club’s vehicles are authorised to enter the Salient.

Clients staying two nights can choose to visit the Aberdare National Park on a half-day safari with a sumptuous Noah's lunch on the decks on the Ark (min. 4 pax).

Incentives :

  |  Salient Picnic  |  Noah's Luncheon  |  Bongo's Brunch  |

Most of our guests like to combine their incentive activities with the Aberdare Country Club, however, The Ark is a superb location for special group breakfasts or lunches. Should you prefer to have a meal in the great outdoors, may we suggest a picnic lunch on the Moorlands of the Aberdare Mountains, or a bush meal in the Sanctuary at the Aberdare Country Club?

Special welcome punches/cocktails (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) can be arranged on prior request at a charge. Fruit, Flowers and Cakes are available on prior request.

Presentation/Talk:  The Resident Hunter may conduct a special talk on the ecosystem and wildlife each evening in the main lounge area.

Theme Events:

  1. Salient Picnic

  2. Noah's Luncheon (please refer to following description).

  3. Bongo's Brunch (please refer to following description).

NOAH'S LUNCHEON  (Maximum : 50 persons;   Minimum : 2 persons)

The Ark, our luxurious forest lodge nestles comfortably in the dense rain forest of the Salient in the Aberdare National Park. From the large open-fronted verandah guests can watch an endless procession of wildlife quenching their thirst at the waterhole below. Meals are not usually served on the verandah, and in fact, Ark guests enjoy lunch at The Aberdare Country Club.  Noah's Luncheon is something different - perfect for guests who are staying at the Aberdare Country Club to break a full day's game drive in the Salient, or as a prelude to an afternoon drive in the Reserve.  You will have The Ark completely to yourselves. Tables will be set up on the verandah, and a delicious four course lunch will be served.   A typical menu comprises:

Cold Avocado Soup

Fresh Grilled Rainbow Trout served with New Potatoes and Salads

Strawberries and Fresh Farm Cream

Cheeses from the Area

Kenya Coffee

BONGO'S BRUNCH  (Maximum : 50 persons, Minimum : 15 persons)

After a night at The Ark, much of it spent eagerly watching the endless pageant of game drinking at the waterhole, guests usually have an early breakfast before setting off for The Aberdare Country Club at 08.00 a.m.  Bongo's Brunch is something very different. When Ark guests have left the forest lodge to return to The Aberdare Country Club, the shyer animals nervously emerge from the bush to drink at the waterhole and lick the salt. Either Aberdare Country Club or Ark guests wishing to enjoy the tranquillity of an 'unoccupied' Ark can return to the lodge after an early morning game drive and spend the rest of the morning quietly observing game and partaking of a delicious brunch. A typical brunch comprises:

Bloody Marys and Buck's Fizz

Fresh Tropical Fruits and Fruit Juices

Porridge and Cereals

Whole Honey Baked Ham

Eggs Cooked to order and Bacon

Kedgeree made with Fresh Local Rainbow Trout

Fish Cakes

Waffles, Toast and Croissants

Home Made Marmalade and Jams

Cheeses from the Area

Kenya Tea and Coffee

Travelling through the Salient, you gradually climb in your 4x4 vehicle to the National Park gate at a height of about 8000 feet. • CHILDREN'S NIGHTS:

As Lonrho Hotels Kenya does not as a rule allow children under the age of 7 years to visit the Ark, due to the increased noise levels of the excited children, we periodically hold our "Children's Nights".  On these occasions, there is no age limit for children, and our Resident Naturalist and Young Explorer's Club representative take charge of the children's activities at the Ark. These could be art competitions, group games, game spotting just to name a few. A special children's dinner is on offer at 06.30 p.m. for the younger children, and the adult's dinner remains at 07.30 p.m. This is an ideal opportunity for families with younger children to view the amazing game at the waterhole, and we also cater to school groups and other study groups during these times.

Accommodation and Food & Beverage :

The Ark is known as a "tree hotel", whereby the hotel is built on pilons in such a way as to not disturb the animals and eco-system around the waterhole. The Ark is one of two "tree hotels" situated in the Aberdare National Park, but is the only one to have all client bedrooms fully en-suite.
