High
on the slopes of Africa's second highest mountain, The Mount

decorative ponds. Ever since the Club was founded in 1959
by the late film star William Holden, eccentric American Ray

DESCRIPTIONS:
Just
a short distance from the manicured grounds of the Mount Kenya
Safari Club, the River Likii's crystal clear waters dance and
sparkle over perfectly rounded pebbles and pink, grey and russet
stones. Melted snow and ice from the glaciers and peaks of Mt
Kenya, the water is breath-takingly chilly, home to both brown
and rainbow trout and miniature turtles. Lush foliage, typical
of a rain forest, and lichen-clad Cedar and Podo trees border
the river providing cover for wildlife and perches for the
numerous species of iridescent, dainty, noisy and colourful
birds.
Residents
of Mt Kenya Safari Club can enjoy a private dinner in this fairy
tale setting. Straddling the River Likii is a wide, cedar wood
platform. The surrounding trees and bushes are lit with
hurricane lanterns and at full moon the set glows with an almost
luminescent silver light. Clusters of crystal glasses, gleaming
candelabra and silverware and dainty wild flower arrangements
grace starched white table linen. Rows of attentive, smiling
waiters welcome guests with flutes of the finest champagne or
warming tumblers of gluwein. Slightly downstream a blazing fire
is lit and a troupe of magnificent Chukka dancers emerges from
the bush. The throbbing of drums and unforgettable voices of
African tribesmen fill the air, silencing the crickets, Tree
Hyrax and Abyssinnian Nightjars. The fire's amber flames are
reflected on ebony skins and traditional costumes - flowing
colobus monkey skins and rows of eagle feathers appear to have a
life of their own, swirling and shimmering as the dancers
transcend in their ageless ritual dances. Later, a
six-course dinner is served on the platform, whilst the river,
reflecting the lanterns and moon, continues its ceaseless
journey beneath. A typical menu comprises of:
| Cream
of Garden Vegetable Soup |
| Whole
Poached Trout with Lemon and Butter Sauce |
| Fillet
Steak or Supreme of Chicken, with Safari Potatoes,
Baby Vegetables, Fresh Garden Salads |
| Pineapple
and Strawberry Surprise with Thick Nanyuki Cream |
| Selection
of Kenyan Cheeses |
| Kenya
Tea or Coffee |
Throughout
the evening braziers and bonfires are stoked and glasses
re-charged. Nightjars and hyrax recommence their choruses and
the occasional hyena whoops nearby. Guests are welcome to stay
as long as they wish. Four-wheel drive vehicles are standing by,
ready to return diners to their rooms, at their leisure. Dinner
on the River Likii - a truly unforgettable experience.

braziers ward off the night chill and a full bar at the far end

cocktail shakers competes with the high-pitched chorus of

BUSH
LUNCHEON ON THE RIVER LIKII:
Luncheon
on the River Likii is an equally unforgettable
experience. The setting is the same, without, of course,
the moon, hurricane lanterns, and bonfire! A similar

| Safaris
& Excursions : |
|
National Park Entry :
All residents of Kenya, Tanzania and
Uganda are obliged to have a valid Kenya Wildlife Service
"Smart Card" to enter into National Parks. These are
obtainable from KWS and are free of charge. Entry will not be
allowed into the Park without the Smart Card for residents.
Bird Walks:
The Club's extensive grounds are alive with an enormous variety
of bird life. Guests can enjoy 2-hour guided bird walks with the
resident ornithologist. Departures at 08.00 a.m., 10.00 a.m.,
02.00 p.m. and 04.00 p.m.
Fishing Safaris (half day)
: Mount Kenya is the source of many
freshwater rivers that cascade from its rugged slopes. Along
these courses, trout fishing is available to fishermen. In
rivers Naromoru, Sirimon, Likii, Nanyuki and Thego, Royal
Coachman flies are cast to lure the agile and swift Brown or
Rainbow trout. Safari-man Peter De Mello will only be too
pleased to teach you your first casting lesson. Rods/flies are
provided and licenses arranged.
Sweetwaters
Game Reserve : A
morning or afternoon game drive can be arranged (half day) to
this sanctuary. Sweetwaters is the name adopted by the local
people of this area for the fresh sweet water tapped from the
ground. Located in typical savannah grasslands interrupted by
the `Whistling Thorn' shrubs, Acacia trees and lush green
vegetation along the Uaso Nyiro River, this 24,000 acre rhino
sanctuary is 15 km on an unpaved road from Nanyuki (good weather
only). Here giraffe, zebra, eland, oryx, waterbuck, Grants
gazelle, Thompsons gazelle, elephant, buffalo, silver-backed
jackal, ostrich, hartebeest, baboon, hippo and rhino roam free.
There are also several bird species to observe.
Aberdare National Park
: So as to conserve and protect the
environment, few (full day) people are allowed to visit this
park, home to elephant, rhino, buffalo, bush buck, giant forest
hog, Sykes monkey and leopard. It is also an ornithologist's
paradise. Departing at 09.00 a.m., you drive through scenic
rural towns, before entering the park. A picnic lunch is served
on a site overlooking the forest and the surrounding mountains.
You finish off with an additional game drive through a private
ranch which houses plains game. Warm clothing is required as the
return trip gets quite chilly. A special license is arranged for
you.
Samburu and Buffalo Springs
National Game Reserves :
Driving through wheat/sheep farming
areas, you (full day) descend to 3,000 feet to arrive at Isiolo
town, the gateway to Kenya's northern frontiers, and also the
home of the Turkana, Somali, Boran and Samburu tribes of Kenya.
Samburu National Park is a beautiful arid savannah country, home
to rare species of wildlife not to be seen anywhere else in
Kenya (reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Somali ostrich and beisa
oryx), besides lion, elephant, leopard, cheetah, buffalo,
impala, dik-dik, etc. A picnic lunch is served on the
banks of River Uaso Nyiro, where crocodiles and hippos laze.
After watching traditional dances performed by tall, slender
Samburu men and women, you depart for the Club, arriving at
sundown.
World Class Fishing Lake Alice
: Lake Alice is located at 15,000 ft on
Mt. Kenya. A (1 day and night) private charter flies guests to
the lodge here, and fishing enthusiasts can enjoy a full day of
fishing in this stupendous backdrop. Equipment is provided, as
are licenses. Maximum number of guests is 6.
Mount Kenya National Park
: Travelling along the Sirimon track in
your vehicle, (half or full day) you gradually climb to the
National Park gate at a height of 9,200 ft. As you ascend, the
vegetation changes to tall cedars, Podo trees, thick Bamboo
forest and varieties of Alpine trees. Wild mountain flowers
bloom in a riot of colour. A profuse bird-life resides here.
Despite the dense vegetation, there are glimpses of elephant,
buffalo, zebra, colobus monkey and waterbuck. At 12,200 ft in
the upper tundra region, you see the majestic peaks of Mt Kenya,
Batian and Nelion. On a half day trip, you depart after
breakfast and return in time for a hearty lunch. On a full day
trip, you have a picnic lunch, and there is time to go on a 1-2
hour walk up the mountain.
