The
world famous and most spectacular annual
animal mass migration of nearly two
million wildebeest and Zebra from the Serengeti National Park in
Tanzania to the Maasai Mara
Reserve between the months of July to September and back to
Serengeti January/February.
Every year the
herd’s bull leaders taste the wind at
the beginning of the long rains and then decide to
lead their herds towards Lake Victoria in the West. The herds
turn northwards before reaching the lake and cross the Mara
River into Kenya looking for fresh pastures in the Maasai Mara.
When the herd
leaders smell the short rains of October, they
command their herds’ southeastwards across Olduvai Gorge back
to the Serengeti. (Olduvai Gorge, where
Dr. Leakey discovered remains of early man.) Some
bones of wildebeest all dating two
million years, this proving that the Serengeti-Mara
wildebeest migration has existed for millions of years. Their
attendant predators, hyena, lion, wild dog and vultures follow
the migrating animals.
Thousands of
them fall prey to the predators while
many more die in the Mara floods while crossing the river.
Visitors to Mara in August through September will certainly see
the Splendor of this natural phenomena a happening as it were
hundred years ago. Apart from the migratory animal, Maasai Mara
is rich in resident game with over 95 species recorded in the
Reserve.

| THE
ISOKON CULTURAL CENTRE
‘Isokon is
a huge tree that does not wither.’
For the
ultimate Maasai experience, visit the Isokon
Maasai Museum of culture where you can learn more about the
Maasai people and their culture. Guests to the museum
can visit the ethnographic room where artifacts are put on show
and the Wall of Fame displays portraits
of Maasai legends.
The Narok
County Council
offered the land where the museum was to stand, while Sarova
Hotels offered to fund the construction of the four manyatta’s
(Maasai house made of cow dung and mud), and buy the collection
of artefacts. It was part of Sarova’s
activities to mark the 15th anniversary of the Sarova Mara Camp.
The museum takes
the shape of a traditional Maasai manyatta with four
rectangle flat-roofed structures built with sticks and mixture
of cow dung and mud. In one manyatta is a collection of
artefacts, like an old horn covered with skin hangs in the same
position it hanged in the room of the original owner who used it
to store oil.
From the
collection, you learn the difference between women hide garment
and that of men. The cultural meaning of the numerous ornaments
worn by ladies and when they change from one to the other. The
Maasai club has to be carved in the shape of the hip bone to not
only make it easy to carry but also to symbolize the crucial
role it plays in the life of men. ….
Decked
with portraits of pioneer leaders and heroes the
facility is rich with information about how they led the
community in successful raids and arbitrated in disputes. Among
them Olaiguani, the chief
spiritual leader, a wise war hero, who is said to have killed
single handedly killed several lions, cheetahs and leopards to
save the herd. He now controls the larger Narok district. There
are also the men and women’s rooms where guests can learn more
of the role of the Maasai man and women and the woman and the
work they do.
Guests to the
museum can also learn how to make
various Maasai artifacts and certificates are awarded to those
participating in these apprentice classes. Entrance
charges available upon request.
